Apollo's temple

Discovered around 1860 in a sixteenth-century Spanish barracks, was reported entirely to light thanks to excavations carried out by Paolo Orsi in the years between 1938 and 1942. The previous construction is not held account the presence of a historical monument, which was damaged seriously precisely because of overlap architecture.



 

The temple measuring 58 x 24 meters, with a provision of 6 x 17 columns. It is dated in early sixth century. BC and is therefore the oldest Doric temple in Sicily. The cell was divided into three naves with two colonnades interior. Special case is the presence of any step in a side And an inscription dedicated to Apollo and signed by the manufacturer: generally absent in Greek temples.
The temple has undergone several transformations, was Byzantine church, which retains the front staircase, but especially for the presence of a median door. Then it became Arab mosque, to a higher level settled the Norman church of the Saviour who was then incorporated in the future Spanish barracks.
